Descendants was the dream of Robin Molloy, an Irish transplant who arrived in Kitchener in 1990 and moved to Berlin, Germany in 2012 to study to become a Certified Brewmaster at the VLB. Upon returning to Kitchener-Waterloo Robin and his partner Lee began to develop Descendants.
It wasn’t called Descendants at that time. It didn’t have a name. There were over 1000 names brainstormed but in the end Descendants was chosen because it included everyone.
Everyone is a descendant of someone, including beer. Beer is not native to Canada. The beverages we drink today barely resemble the ancient Mesopotamian beverage. Over generations it has grown, changed and evolved. Countries and cultures all over the world have added their own creativity and technology to perfecting what we currently enjoy today.
A brewery is kettles, tanks, drains, hoses, kegs and more. Descendants is not just a brewery. We have all of those items and we use them to brew our beer but we are more than that. Descendants is a place for fun, celebration and for building community. It was deliberately designed to be a brewery + European style bierhalle + beer store + event venue. We designed it to host you, your family, your friends and your neighbours. Descendants was built to be a place where everyone belongs.
We pride ourselves on continuing the message of inclusion within our name with our community involvement and partnerships, with groups such as Extend A Family WR, Community Integration through Cooperative Education at Conestoga College, Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre, OneRoof, and SHORE to name just a few.
We work diligently to create an open and caring culture with our customers and our team members. We care about our community and all of the people who live here. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, sexism and all other types of discrimination are not welcome here.
And because Descendants is more than a brewery, if beer is not for you, no problem. We have a full bar with our beer, craft cider, spirits, wine and soft drinks. (We do hold tight to the belief that we can change your mind and show you how great beer can be if you give us a chance). Our menu offers vegetarian, vegan, gluten free as well as meat options.
There have been many debates about whether children should be permitted in breweries. We don’t see the need for debate. We are a family friendly brewery. Anyone under the age of 19 can visit the brewery before 9:00 pm. We hold several events throughout the year for children and families.
We truly appreciate you taking the time to check out our website and learn more about who we are and what is important to us. Thank you for checking out our craft brewery and event space. We genuinely look forward to sharing our space, our beer, our food and our time celebrating life with you soon.
